Amazon Women on the Moon (1987)

A true sketch comedic movie is hard to pull off and it ranges from a classic such as ‘The Groove Tube’ to ‘Head’ to this half achieved movie. It has a trasheap style to all of its humour and pacing, even its comedic timing is lost in the end. Not to leave this review just alone, I'd rather talk of this movie as a laughter machine.

It's a rather true blow to a comedic temper such as that of a John Landis or Joe Dante to totally do such a mixed elephant of a movie. There are a great many blackout sketches, ridiculous names, and there are also twist endings, loving older movie parodies and tv shows to take on. The entire movie was too schematic and mixed to be a box office success and it did only moderately well on video and dvd.

The 1970s sketch movies were a mixed bag but were usually better and cleverer than much of ‘Amazon' and they were better timed and tighter. 'The Kentucky Fried Movie’ (1977) to ‘The Groove Tube’ (1974) were comedic heights and some of the first salvos of the coming in hip humour. They were something to look at and to smile and kid over as tittering children to teenagers. There is much to accuse and dislike in 'Amazon' and I have had doubts about this, but the directors did good movies and went onto other better projects that still carried it off and did work for the pop joys we have here.
