Mime artist Marcel Marceau was an only in European culture type of mime artist who was a French national artist and celebrity with many years of work in his native France. He was never a presence even in the French movie industry as a Chaplin was in the U.S.A or a Norman Wisdom in England. Peter Sellers or Terry Thomas was a draw in comic movies, not Marceau.
"Shanks" has its flaws from its stereotyped women's roles to its final sentimental ending that clouds up its story at the end. It has a cheap B movie action sense to it and there are moments that have a confusingly edited quality to it. Not all movies are created equal, especially a fighting revenge story.
Marceau isn't a very good actor in the English language small town role he plays here, the French accent shines through his acting, he's too peasant European for the role and it isn't a real showcase of his miming abilities except in certain designated for him scenes. As well, The Coppelia slash Frankenstein styled story here isn't all that fresh or all that audience entrancing by the end but there are moments.
